Bio Metrics

Fast, reliable, safe

Chips provides a unique, fast and highly accurate mechanism for recording and identifying pupils and staff using their Biometric templates.  Whilst there are many people still concerned about the u se of finger templates within schools, the technology is extremely secure (even used by the Pentagon) and the individuals indentity cannot be sold or replicated by a third party.  CHIPS stores all biometric information about pupils and staff in the form of a completely secure, non-reconstructable digital algorithm.

Biometric Enrollment - What's involved?

Generally speaking, biometric readers are more susceptible to read failures than smart cards due to the "light-related" process involved, the different angles of finger presentation, moisture and grease.  Once the data has been imported from the MIS (SIMS, CMIS and others are supported), Chips collects not one but three samples of the selected finger at enrolment stage to create a more complete record of the print.

Adaptive Biometrics - Continually learns improving accuracy

When the system goes live Chips will continue to store additional reads for each pupil until it has 10 images on record.  It will then constantly compare the quality of each additional print as the pupil makes further purchases rejecting the lowest quality read and retain the 10 best scoring templates.  In this way the system continually "learns" about the pupil's biometric identity and increases accuracy and speed of identification.

Smart Matching - Chips takes it's "best guess" to speed things up

If, for whatever reason, the system is unable to make a read, the canteen operator may select to type in the name of the pupil until the correct name and image appears on screen.  If a partial match is made against a number of records but the match is not absolute and undisputed, the system will present the names and photographs of the five closest matches to the print for final selection by the till operator.
